A new generation is coming of age, and it is full of adventurous cooks and eaters who think about food in an especially mindful way. Sustainability, seasonality, food safety, animal welfare, and fair labor practices are all issues they pay attention to when thinking about their next meal.

They’re out to make a difference. You’ll find a whole community of them at, a digital media organization and cause services agency that empowers people to take action, to make the world a better place. It’s also a never-ending source of conversation starters—a big plus if you like to sit around the dinner table and gab.

TakePart is owned by Participant Media, an entertainment company founded by Jeff Skoll in 2004. Participant is known for some of the most compelling films of our time, including The Kite Runner, Charlie Wilson’s War, An Inconvenient Truth, Food, Inc., The Cove, and The Help.

So where do I come in? TakePart’s foodies are smart, skeptical, and insatiably curious. They want to know how to make kale taste delicious (it’s easy), what to choose at the seafood or meat counter (a bit trickier), where their food comes from (yikes). Their queries give me a chance to share the knowledge I’ve acquired over 25 years in the food world. And I get to learn stuff, too, which is always fun.
