A new generation has come of age, and it is full of adventurous cooks and eaters who think about food in an especially mindful way. Sustainability, seasonality, food safety, animal welfare, and fair labor practices are all issues they pay attention to when thinking about their next meal.

From 2012 to 2016, there was a very engaged community of them at TakePart.com, an award-winning news and advocacy site owned by Participant Media, an entertainment company that’s known for some of the most compelling films of our time, including The Kite Runner, Charlie Wilson’s War, An Inconvenient Truth, Food, Inc., The Cove, The Help, Lincoln, and Spotlight.

So where did I come in? TakePart’s foodies were smart, skeptical, and insatiably curious. They wanted to know how to make kale taste delicious (it’s easy), what to choose at the seafood or meat counter (a bit trickier), where their food comes from (yikes). Their queries gave me a chance to share the knowledge I’ve acquired over 30-plus years in the food world. And I had the chance to learn stuff, too, which is always fun.
